✅ Remediation
For details on how to apply this update, which includes the changes described in this advisory, refer to: https://access.redhat.com/articles/11258 The system must be rebooted for this update to take effect. Red Hat recommends treating all kernel errata as security-relevant. Given the kernel's fundamental role, any bug has a higher chance of impacting system security, even if that impact only becomes clear after a fix is published. Therefore, Red Hat prioritizes delivering fixes that improve our customers' overall security posture. Because of this proactive approach, a patch may be associated with a CVE assignment at a future date. Retroactive CVE assignments are always documented in the corresponding errata and on Red Hat's CVE pages. We strongly advise against delaying updates, as doing so may leave your system exposed when protections are already available. Workaround: To mitigate this issue, prevent the `amdkfd` kernel module from loading if it is not required. This can be achieved by blacklisting the module. 1. Create a new file `/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-amdkfd.conf` with the following content: `blacklist amdkfd` 2. Regenerate the initramfs to ensure the blacklist is applied during boot: `sudo dracut -f -v` (for RHEL 8/9) `sudo mkinitrd -f -v /boot/initramfs-$(uname -r).img $(uname -r)` (for RHEL 7) 3. Reboot the system for the changes to take effect. Note: Blacklisting the `amdkfd` module may impact functionality that relies on the AMD KFD driver, such as certain AMD GPU compute features. Evaluate the necessity of this module before applying the mitigation. Workaround: To mitigate this vulnerability, prevent the amdgpu kernel module from loading if AMD GPU hardware is not required on the system. 1. Create a configuration file in `/etc/modprobe.d/` to blacklist the module: ```bash echo "blacklist amdgpu" > /etc/modprobe.d/amdgpu-blacklist.conf echo "install amdgpu /bin/true" >> /etc/modprobe.d/amdgpu-blacklist.conf ``` 2. If the module is already loaded, unload it or reboot the machine: ```bash rmmod amdgpu ``` Caveats: Disabling the `amdgpu` driver will prevent graphical output, video acceleration, and compute functionality on systems equipped with AMD Radeon graphics hardware. Warning: Unloading active kernel modules or applying configuration changes may require a full system restart to take effect if the driver is currently in use by the display server or running applications. Workaround: Mitigation for this issue is either not available or the currently available options do not meet the Red Hat Product Security criteria comprising ease of use and deployment, applicability to widespread installation base, or stability. Workaround: To mitigate this vulnerability, prevent the `cifs` kernel module from being loaded if SMB/CIFS network file systems are not required. 1. Add the module to the modprobe blacklist configuration: # echo "install cifs /bin/true" >> /etc/modprobe.d/disable-cifs.conf # echo "blacklist cifs" >> /etc/modprobe.d/disable-cifs.conf 2. If the module is currently loaded, unmount all active CIFS shares and unload the module: # modprobe -r cifs Caveats: Disabling the module prevents the system from mounting or accessing remote SMB/CIFS file shares. If the module cannot be unloaded immediately due to active usage, a system restart will be required for the configuration to take effect. Workaround: Prevent the vhost kernel module from loading on systems where kernel-accelerated virtio is not required. 1. Add a configuration entry in /etc/modprobe.d to disable autoloading: # echo "install vhost /bin/true" > /etc/modprobe.d/disable-vhost.conf 2. If the module is already loaded and no guests are using it, unload the vhost drivers: # modprobe -r vhost_net vhost_vsock vhost_scsi vhost Caveats: Disabling vhost prevents in-kernel acceleration for virtio networking, storage, and vsock communication, which may degrade I/O performance or cause virtual machine instances dependent on vhost devices to fail to start. Warning: A system reboot or stopping active virtual machines is required if the driver is currently loaded and actively in use.
